Avocado Green Mattress & Toppers

  • Are your product reviews real?

    YotPo, Third-Party Customer Reviews

Yotpo is a content marketing application specifically designed for e-
commerce stores and retail businesses like Avocado Green Mattress. It makes it possible for our customers to generate unfiltered and authentic product reviews and ratings. It is an automatic system that emails verified customers after they purchase our product.

    How YotPo Reviews are Acquired:

Mail After Purchase: The YotPo system sends an email after every purchase to our customers, approximately 30-45 days after the transaction. (We do not request reviews immediately after a transaction.) These are verified reviews, associated with a customer file and order, and are shown with a green check mark in the listings.

Onsite Reviews: On our product pages, customers can click the "Write Review" button and submit a review. These are unverified reviews, and will be shown in the listing without a check mark. We have only a handful of these at present.

Why Do You Have So Many 5-Star Reviews?

First and foremost, we have a quality product that we make ourselves, in our own Los Angeles factory. So our reviews are exceptionally strong. But when things do go wrong, we have a large, talented and engaged support team. We do our best to fix problems that arise, to make things right. Our Customer Advocacy Team addresses this specifically, which is why you will see so many shout-outs to our great customer service!

  • How and where do I leave a review or testimonial?

If you'd like to leave a review for Avocado and our products, we highly encourage you to do so! There are four options to leave reviews, listed below. Please note which options are from verified customers with verified transactions — an important consideration when determining the relevance and reliability of the review.

Of course, if something is not right with your order or experience, please contact us directly using our online chat functionality or our contact form. We'd love the opportunity to make it right!

    YotPo Mail After Purchase Emails

    Verified Customer & Verified Transactions
After you make a purchase from us, you will receive a "mail after purchase" email directly from YotPo – a third-party customer review and ratings platform — approximately 30 to 45 days after your initial transaction. You will receive a request to review only one of the products from your order, which is chosen at random by YotPo.

Mail-after-purchase reviews are Verified Buyer Reviews, and are shown with a green check mark online at our website, since these reviews are written by real customers with matching transaction IDs. These reviews can be updated by the customer at any time, using the link provided in the original mail-after-purchase email review request. Please note: we are able to leave public and private comments in response.

    YotPo Review Online Review

Unverified Customer, Not Associated with a Transaction
On all of our product pages, like the Avocado Green Mattress page, you can write a review at any time. (You cannot write a review on the main Reviews page or on the left green REVIEWS tab, due to platform limitations with YotPo.) To leave a review, just look for the gray WRITE A REVIEW button. These reviews will show as unverified, since YotPo will not be able to confirm your review is associated with a confirmed transaction. Reviews typically appear within 24 hours, when the platform publishes new reviews. Reviews that contain personal contact information (full name, phone number or email address) or profanity will be included in the overall rating score for the product, but will not display publicly.

Unverified Customer, Not Associated with a Transaction
If you search for Avocado Mattress at Google.com, our Knowledge Box should appear, which contains a website link, reviews, our address, hours, photos, etc. You can select the reviews link here and leave a review at any time. These reviews are shown in Google search and maps results. Please note: we are only able to leave public comments in response.

Unverified Customer, Not Associated with a Transaction
On Facebook, you can post a review on our page, in the Reviews section. These are also unverified reviews. Since Facebook will sometimes prompt a user to review a page they have visited — even if they have not ever visited their website or made a purchase — these reviews can be unqualified.

Also, other Facebook customers can reply to your review. When they do, you will be notified directly to continue the conversation or respond.

Many companies "turn off" Facebook reviews, so the option is not available. Although these reviews can be unqualified, we do not turn off the reviews tab functionality. You can leave a review for us here, and also read our YotPo reviews, which are imported into Facebook. Please note: we are able to leave public comments in response.

    Consumer Reports

Unverified Customers, Not Associated with a Transaction
If you are a member of Consumer Reports, you can write a review for Avocado at any time. These reviews are verified to be from Consumer Reports members, but do not need to be associated with a verified transaction. Please note: we can not comment or reply in any way.

Latex Softness, Firmness, Feel

  • What's the best mattress for my sleeping position?

    Recommended Mattress: Pillow-Top Option

Side sleeping is the most common sleeping position. Because of the curves in your hips and shoulders, pressure relief becomes an important consideration. Our Avocado Green Mattresses have an advanced innerspring unit at the base, with three zones of support. These coils are tuned to provide optimal support for your hips and shoulders and help to ensure that your spine is properly aligned. Our comfort layers, which rest on top of the support coils, feature 4 inches of 100% GOLS organic certified latex foam. This provides the gentle, uplifting support that side sleepers require.

    Recommended Mattress: Standard

Back sleeping is the second most common position and has a slightly less "curvy" profile than side sleeping. As a result, less latex is required in the top layers to ensure proper support and pressure relief. For this reason, we recommend our standard Avocado Green Mattress (without the pillow-top option) for back sleepers.

    Recommended Mattress: Standard

Stomach sleeping is the least common position and has the flattest sleeping profile of all of the positions. Stomach sleepers need the least amount of support in the hips and shoulders. Instead, they require a gentle, yet firm surface. Our standard Avocado Green Mattress (without the pillow-top option) is ideally suited for stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers that sleep in this position due to lower back pain will also benefit from our standard mattress.

    Recommended Mattress: Standard

Children and adolescents need a firmer sleep surface for safety and to support their growing bones. Our standard mattress provides the ideal support, durability and natural materials that children require.

  • How soft is your natural mattress?

The Avocado Green Mattress is available in two styles.

The standard version delivers a gentle, yet slightly firmer sleeping experience. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = Soft as a cloud, 10 = Very firm), our standard mattress is a 7.

Our pillow-top mattress features an additional 2″ layer of GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex and is softer — and rates as a 6.

Which one is right for you? Extremely petite or light individuals benefit less from the additional layer of latex. That being said, approximately 75% of our customers opt for the pillow-top version of our mattress.

  • Does an Avocado Mattress sleep hot?

Our GOLS organic certified Dunlop Latex is one of nature’s best sleeping surfaces because it provides pressure-relief, comfort and support without the feeling of “sinking into” your mattress. An Avocado features a resilient sleep surface, which feels like "floating" rather than sinking. The organic & natural materials also breathe exceptionally well, so you can rest assured that you will sleep comfortably cool.

  • How bouncy is your mattress?

Avocado Green Mattresses are responsive to your movements, yet offer excellent motion-control, stability and flexibility. They are great for play, sex and fun, without excessive bounce or motion-transfer.

  • Dunlop vs. Talalay Latex

There are two manufacturing processes for producing natural latex foam — Dunlop and Talalay. Both start with all natural latex sap sustainably harvested from Hevea Brasiliensis trees, and both can be be made in a wide variety of firmnesses.

However, Talalay latex requires more processing and chemical additives when being manufactured than does the Dunlop process. The Dunlop process is simple, more energy-efficient and creates a more durable product.

As a result, our mattresses feature GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex because we believe it's a healthier choice and more eco-friendly.

  • Is Latex Hypoallergenic?

Latex is not hypoallergenic. According to the American Latex Allergy Association, about 1% of the general US population are sensitized have an allergy with natural rubber latex. The rate is higher among healthcare workers.

Many natural mattress companies falsely claim that their latex is hypoallergenic, which it logically cannot be if 1% of the US population has a latex allergy. We do not make this claim and recognize that a mattress made with organic latex may not be appropriate for those with an existing latex allergy.

However, our latex is GOLS organic certified, eco-INSTITUT® certified, anti-microbial, Greenguard Gold certified, breathable, durable, resilient and sustainable.

100% GOTS Organic Certified Wool

  • What products are Vegan certified?

At Avocado, we are dedicated to sharing the benefits of Veganism, and actively support our customers that make a life-long commitment to being vegan and living animal-friendly lifestyles.

To this end, many of our products are certified and verified by Vegan Action / The Vegan Awareness Foundation in Richmond, Virginia. These products do not use wool and do not contain animal products or byproducts that have not been tested on animals.

Our vegan products include our Avocado Vegan MattressGreen PillowsOrganic Mattress Pad Protector and Vegan Natural Latex Mattress Toppers.

What does the Certified Vegan logo mean?

The Certified Vegan Logo is a registered trademark, similar in nature to the kosher mark, for products that do not contain animal products or byproducts and that have not been tested on animals. The certified logo is easily visible to consumers interested in vegan products and helps vegans to shop without constantly consulting ingredient lists.

Since we do currently make some products that use wool, we have demonstrated acceptable steps that we take to thoroughly clean and sanitize all surfaces, tools and machinery used between vegan and non-vegan production cycles to minimize cross-contamination where share machinery is used.

  • Are your mattresses vegan? Do you make an option without wool or animal products?

Because the Avocado Green Mattresses uses wool, it is not considered vegan.

However, we are excited about our animal- and eco-conscious Avocado Vegan Mattress!

Our new Vegan Mattress is made by hand in our Los Angeles factory, and is identical in every way to our best selling Avocado Green Mattress except for one important difference — it replaces the GOTS Organic Certified wool with 100% GOTS Organic Certified and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® cotton batting sourced from family farmers in India

And best of all, the prices of the Avocado Green Mattress and Avocado Vegan Mattress are exactly the same! 😃

  • Is wool hot?

People wear clothing made of wool to keep warm in cold climates, and people wear it to keep cool in hot desert areas. Just ask the Bedouins of the Middle East who have been wearing wool in the middle of the desert for centuries.

Yes, you read that correctly. For hundreds of years, these nomadic people have chosen wool for their treks across some of the hottest lands on Earth. That's because wool is well-known for it’s superior insulation properties, but few people realize it works both ways.

The fact is: wool is an excellent temperature moderator, ideally suited for use in bedding. It's also sustainable, natural, biodegradable and compostable. Wool will far outlast most synthetic fibers due to its unique "crimped" structure.

In our Avocado Green Mattress, we use only the finest — GOTS Organic Certified and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® Wool.

  • Why is wool so great at moisture wicking?

When used in bedding, our 100% GOTS Certified Wool creates a micro-climate which assists in regulating body temperature and humidity, providing a more rested night's sleep.

    (A) Thermal Comfort: Wool provides a high level of thermal comfort due to its outstanding insulating properties. Wool offers warmth under cool conditions because the natural crimp of the fibre allows air to be trapped. The thermal resistance of air means it is six to ten times as insulating as any fibre. This insulating property of wool ensures that temperature changes are slow and gradual when wool is used in a bedding situation, avoiding rapid temperature changes.

    (B) Moisture Absorption: Wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water without feeling wet (hydrophilic). The reason for this is that its constituent keratin is very rich in amino acids which easily bind together with water molecules. Wool is particularly hydrophilic when water is present in the form of vapor. As humidity levels rise, wool fibers absorb and store the moisture, keeping the humidity at skin surface relatively low. The absorbed moisture in the wool fibre can also be diffused into the atmosphere. This property ensures that damp, clammy feeling will never be experienced with wool.

Support Coils, Innersprings

  • Are the coils in your innerspring unit made with tempered steel?

The steel wire used in Leggett & Platt’s high-quality innersprings makes each coil sturdy and resilient, even after years of use. Unlike units of lesser quality, our coils are tempered using heat or electricity so they bounce back to their original shape. After a coil is turned and shaped into its final form, tempering the spring realigns the molecular structure to ensure the coil won’t sag or settle over time. This greatly increases stability and durability.

  • Tell me more about the innerspring support unit. How many coils are there? What gauge are they?

  • What is the difference between the comfort and support layers?

    Comfort Layers

The comfort layers of a mattress are at the top of the mattress and can be made from polyurethane foam, memory foam, gel, micro-coils, latex and/or natural and artificial fibers. These are the "padding" layers that are designed to support your body's natural curves while applying pressure relief.

In our comfort layers, we use GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex and GOTS organic certified wool. Our ticking is made with GOTS organic certified cotton for a natural and luxurious finish. These materials also hold STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certifications.

    Support Layers

The support layers are generally found at the bottom of the mattress and are often made with firmer polyurethane foam, polyfoam, latex and/or a Bonnell, offset coil, continuous coil, or a fabric encased (a.k.a. Marshall or wrapped) innerspring unit. These are the core layers that are designed to provide proper support for your shoulders and hips and reinforcement for the edge while reducing motion transfer, flexing, and enabling the mattress to "breathe" naturally. They are the core structure of the mattress.

Avocado Green Mattresses use a fabric encased innerspring unit, over a firm layer of GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex.

  • What does the legal label tag on your mattress say?

We believe in radical honesty and have nothing to hide. In fact, because we are so proud of what's inside our mattresses and toppers, we fully disclose — before you buy your mattress — exactly what our law labels discloses.

    Background on Mattress Law Labels

Law labels are legally required on mattresses, upholstery and stuffed articles (pillows, plush toys, comforters, and bedding) in 31 states and Canada. The purpose of the law label is to inform the consumer of the hidden contents, or "filling materials" inside bedding and furniture products. The law label was born in the early 1900s to prevent these articles from being further manufactured with contents such as horse hair, corn husks and whatever else a manufacturer could find to use that the consumer would never see, similar to food labeling. (Source: WikiPedia.)

There is a patchwork of laws and regulations that we need to remain compliant with for law labels. Our labels were updated in September, 2019, for uniformity and compliance with the latest state regulations and laws. (No changes in product design were.)

    Please note:

    1. Our mattresses are made in our GOTS & GOLS organic certified facility in Los Angeles, California.
    2. The terminology and information included on the law label is strictly regulated for uniformity. Modifying terms, such as GOTS, GOLS, ORGANIC, NATURAL, or 100%, are not allowed in the top "filling materials" section in some states, but can be listed elsewhere on the label. Regulations are listed here.
    3. The 100% organic cotton ticking fabric is not listed in the top "filling materials" section because, simply put, it's not inside mattress, so it is listed in a lower section (where modifying terms, such as 100% and ORGANIC are allowed.).
    4. Filling materials are listed in order as a percentage of those filling materials by weight.
    5. Laws requiring these tags were passed in the United States to inform consumers as to whether the stuffed article they were buying contained new or recycled materials.
    6. For mattresses, these percentages will vary, based on the size of the mattress purchased. The size of the mattress is noted below. For toppers, they will vary slightly between the plush and firm options as well.
    7. Wool filled products require the statement “CONTENTS STERILIZED” by law in five states, so is included for label uniformity.

    Subject to Change

As an agile business in pursuit of excellence, we are incessantly making product enhancements and improvements. As a result, the content on this page reflects this philosophy and may change, as we continue our quest to offer the most natural and eco-luxury products possible at affordable prices.

  • How are the seams stitched? Will they last?

Yes. We use hand-stitched taped edges, double stitched for durability along the perimeter seams, plus heavy-duty upholstered handles.

Most companies use a simple woven knit top, so they don’t have to do any handwork at the seams. Sure, it may look crisp and sharp in a picture with the knit tightly glued to the core, but you have to wonder how well the edges will hold up over time. How long until you feel like you’re rolling off near the edges?

  • How are the layers of your Green Natural Latex Toppers constructed?

Avocado Green Natural Latex Mattress Topper

Mattress Performance Testing

  • What third-party performance and durability testing is available?

At Leggett & Platt's International Technical Center, they use scientific methods and specialized equipment to measure a mattress' durability and performance over time. The ASTM Certified test results are both quantitative and rigorous. They help validate and justify the length of our 25-year limited mattress warranty. (Consumer Reports® operates a similar facility, and has also performed durability and performance tests on our mattresses.) In September of 2018, Leggett & Platt's International Technical Center (Leggett Labs®) concluded their testing of our two mattress models.

Few, if any, other mattress companies publish their test results. But in the interest of radical transparency — and obvious pride about the performance of our product — our abbreviated test results are published below. In all of the tests performance, our mattresses exceeded established performance standards. The full report and associated test results, which are clearly for our most analytical of customers, are also available for download:

    • Standard Avocado Green Mattress (a.k.a. Reed) Leggett Labs® Report
    • Pillow-Top Avocado Green Mattress (a.k.a. Gwen) Leggett Labs® Report

The Rollater test measures the durability of our mattress over time, to see how much punishment it can take. The Rollator test consists of a hexagonal 240-lbs. roller rolling across the width of a mattress for 100,000 cycles (200,000 passes) at approximately 1,000 cycles per hour, to simulate 10 years of usage. The lab records periodic visual observations to report surface flattening and/or damage. Firmness loss of less than three percent is considered a high-performing mattress.

Results: Standard Mattress (a.k.a. Reed Model):

    1. No notable observations or damage were observed during the Rollator test.
    2. The total firmness loss recorded was -2.20% (refer to page 3 of PDF for data).
    3. The total height loss recorded was approximately -0.129" or -1.091% (refer to page 3 of PDF for data).

Results: Pillow-Top Mattress (a.k.a. Gwen Model):

    1. No notable observations or damage were observed during the Rollator test.
    2. The total firmness loss recorded was -4.47% (refer to page 3 of PDF for data).
    3. The total height loss recorded was approximately -0.158" or -1.144% (refer to page 3 of PDF for data).

To demonstrate durability, an Avocado Mattress only loses approximately 1% of its height after 10 years of hard usage.

The Cornell machine evaluates a 100,000-cycle test of the dual-sphere platen (shaped like buttocks) as forces 230 lbs. onto the bedding, in an attempt to "break its will" to continue offering comfort and support. Readings are taken at 200, 6,000, 12,500, 25,000, 50,000, 75,000, and 100,000 cycles. The data collected is then used to calculate the change in support firmness and preload height. There are no pass/fail parameters in the current ASTM procedure, but the historical guidelines are referenced to put results in perspective.

Results: Standard Mattress (a.k.a. Reed Model):

    1.  The total accumulated dimple recorded was 0.80" (refer to page 2 of PDF for data). Desirable range: 1.75" maximum cumulated dimple.
    2.  The support firmness exhibited an increase of 12.00% (refer to page 2 of PDF for data). Desirable: Upper Range = +40% (Firmness Increase) | Lower Range = -15% (Softening).

Results: Pillow-Top Mattress (a.k.a. Gwen Model):

    1. The total accumulated dimple recorded was 0.60" (refer to page 2 PDF for data). Desirable range: 1.75" maximum cumulated dimple.
    2. The support firmness exhibited an increase of 8.70% (refer to page 2 of PDF for data). Desirable: Upper Range = +40% (Firmness Increase) | Lower Range = -15% (Softening).

A proprietary Leggett Lab's evaluation, the Sway Force Analysis evaluates the sway properties a mattress has when one person is active and another is sleeping. It uses a modified Rollator machine to carefully test how much an individual may or may not be disturbed by pressure on another section of the mattress. Leggett Labs' various precision instruments carefully gauge the overall impact and document the results for further review and final evaluation.

The Impact Test is exactly as it sounds: the Lab's testing machine drops a weight onto the mattress and the lab measures the effect – primarily height loss. The ASTM procedure dictates a 175-pound impact load of a conical-shaped platen from a prescribed height until a 3/4" deformation is achieved.

How well our mattresses distribute pressure is not only a good indicator of the life expectancy of our products, but also how comfortable it will be. The XSENSOR X3 Pro Pressure Imaging System® allows the lab to measure the interface pressure felt between the surface of our mattress and someone lying on top of it.

Although there is no standardized or industry recognized procedure for the pressure blanket system, a pressure of 32 mmHg is considered the point at which capillary blood flow is cut off to the surface of the skin, causing the body to readjust itself for protection.

Mattress Care

  • How to Clean Your Natural Latex Mattress Without Using Harsh Chemicals

Cleaning your mattress, mattress topper and pillows isn’t as complicated as it sounds. Even the worst of disasters can usually be spot cleaned with common household ingredients.

Natural Mattress & Topper Cleaning Overview

Water is not harmful to organic latex, but strong solvents are not recommended. (If you must opt for commercial cleaners, be sure to test them on a small area first. And never use bleach.) Mild detergents or isopropyl alcohol will work well, accompanied with small amounts of cold water. Always attempt to soak up any residual water with a light-colored sponge or white rag by blotting, rather than rubbing. (Using a white rag prevents dye transfer from the cloth to the mattress.) Rotate your rag as stains or dirt lifts. Allow any residual dampness to completely air dry. You can place the mattress outside, since the natural latex is completely covered and not subjected to direct light exposure. However, a cool blow dryer will also work. Steam cleaners are not recommended due to their excessive heat, which can over-bake the organic latex. Do not attempt to remove the mattress ticking, to access the internal materials or support unit.

    Tough Stains

For challenging stains, it's our preference to use natural cleaning options that are in keeping with our product. Here are a few ways to clean your mattress without using harsh commercial cleaners.

Light Cleaning and Deodorizing a Mattress

You can easily clean and deodorize your mattress, or simply freshen it up:

    1. Strip the bed down and sprinkle a layer of baking soda over the entire mattress. Let it sit for about 30 minutes. The baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) actually draws dirt, moisture, and odors out of the fabric surface and the materials beneath (wool, cotton and latex).
    2. Come back with a vacuum cleaner and vacuum all of the baking soda up.

If you like a little fragrance, you can shake a few drops of your favorite essential oils into the baking soda before you sprinkle it on. Lavender and lemon oil work particularly well.

    Removing Stains from Mattresses Naturally

If you have stains set in, try this simple concoction to lift lighter urine, dirt and blood stains out of your mattress.

    – 1-2 parts hydrogen peroxide (start lightly)
    – 1 part dish soap (Dawn Dishwashing Liquid works well)
    – 1 part table salt and/or baking soda (optional)

To remove dirt and lighter stains, just work a small amount of the solution gently into the fabric of your mattress, and allow it to air dry. Then blot the area dry with a dry white rag and scrape off any residue.

Alternatively, vinegar and baking soda may work, as well as Borax or a biodegradable all-purpose cleaner, like Ecover’s All Purpose Cleaner.

Of course, be sure to test your DIY stain remove on a small area first. With natural fibers at play, it's possible that your natural stain remover will whiten the affected area more than intended, leaving you with a bleached spot. So start with a mild mix and proceed slowly.

    Human & Pet Urine

It is prudent to use a waterproof mattress protector and/or mattress pad when young kids are going to be using any mattress. Obviously, we prefer mattress protectors made with natural materials. If you find yourself without one and with a child who wet the bed, clean it up right away. The longer urine remains on any mattress, the harder the stain and odor will be to get out.

To get urine out of a mattress, you’ll need a good enzymatic cleaner. Most enzymatic cleaners are used for stains and spots that pets or humans make. This is the only thing that will break down the odor-causing uric acid and truly get your mattress clean. You can make your own with a recipe like this from fresh citrus peels.

Here’s what to do if someone pees the bed:

    1. Strip the bedding off the mattress immediately, and get started by blotting the urine with towels.
    2. Grab some baking soda and sprinkle it across the wet area to absorb any remaining urine, and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
    3. Now it’s time to use your enzyme cleaner. Spray enough to coat the surface of the mattress, and let it sit for about five minutes.
    4. Come back and blot the mattress dry again.
    5. Sprinkle it with baking soda again, turn on the fans and open the windows, and let the mattress air dry overnight.
    6. In the morning, vacuum up the baking soda and any residue, and prop the mattress up to let it dry completely.

Sunlight is also a great natural stain remover and sterilizer. If needed, you can put your mattress outdoors, ideally in indirect sunlight.

Blood is another bodily fluid that should be cleaned with enzymatic cleaners. However, peroxide is better suited in these instances.

    1. Squirt some hydrogen peroxide onto the affected area, using as little as you can while still getting the bubbling action when it hits the blood. (If you don't have hydrogen peroxide, meat tenderizer works particularly well. The tenderizer's enzymes will dissolve the blood's protein bonds.)
    2. Blot the peroxide up with a dry towel when the bubbling stops.
    3. Apply your enzymatic cleaner, and let it sit for a couple of minutes.
    4. Blot the area first with a cool damp towel, and then a dry towel to pull up the moisture.

If it happens, here's how to best clean it:

    1. Hopefully the mattress had a sheet on it – use that to get any solids out of the way. If not, put on some gloves and grab a trash bag and some paper towels to clear any solids off the mattress.
    2. Blot any fluids off the mattress as best you can with a dry towel.
    3. Sprinkle baking soda across the affected area and let sit for 10 minutes.
    4. Using your enzyme cleaner, spray the area and let it sit for a few minutes.
    5. Blot the mattress again, and sprinkle more baking soda across the top.
    6. Let the mattress air dry overnight, and vacuum the baking soda in the morning.
  • Do I need to flip or rotate my mattress?

No Flipping Needed: Because the Avocado Green Mattress has an internal support coil system with pocketed innersprings as its support layer at the bottom of the mattress, it does not need to be flipped. (Only the top side of the mattress is for sleeping.) There are five zones in the innerspring unit, designed to provide ideal support for your neck, back, shoulders and hips. Because of the way these coil zones are arranged, as shown below, the mattress can be rotated without altering the performance of the zones.

Rotating is Recommended: Avocado Green Mattresses contain lofty filling materials like GOLS organic certified latex, GOTS organic certified wool & cotton. These materials will compress slightly when you first start sleeping on your new Avocado mattress. In order to prevent body impressions, we recommend spinning your mattress (head to foot) once every month for the first six months. After the first six-months, rotating every other month will ensure even wear over the lifespan over the mattress.

To make moving and rotating your mattress a snap, our mattress feature four reinforced, hand-stitched handles — two on each side of the mattress.

Foundations, Boxsprings, Platforms, Slats, Adjustable Bases

  • Will an Avocado Mattress work on an adjustable base?

Unlike most mattresses that are made entirely of petroleum-based polyurethane foam, the Avocado Green Mattress contains natural & organic materials and an internal support unit made of individually-wrapped wire coils. This hybrid approach provides the flexibility needed for the mattress to be used on an adjustable base.

  • Does your mattress work well with boxspring?

Technically speaking, yes, a boxspring will work under an Avocado Green Mattress.

However, the Avocado Green Mattress is best suited for firmer, non-yielding surfaces, to include platform beds, mattress foundations or bed slats within a bed frame placed approximately 5" apart or less. In short, anything that does not contain springs.

Why? Because a boxspring, like the name suggests, actually contains innersprings. Using a boxspring with an Avocado Green Mattress tends to make the sleeping experience too "springy" for most customer preferences.

If you are not sure, try adding a strong, supportive bunkie board (Like the Zinus one shown below) between the boxspring and the mattress. The flat surface will offer a firm, non-yielding surface that is ideal. If you select this option, we also recommend placing the mattress on a coconut pad that will still allow for proper airflow.

(Note: Foundations do not contain innersprings and provide a rigid support surface.)

  • Can I use my existing boxspring or foundation?

Yes! Our Avocado Green Mattress is designed to work on a rigid, non-spring foundation, platform, adjustable bed base or slatted foundation with a maximum spacing of five inches between slats.

Since a boxspring has internal springs, most people would not prefer the feel of an Avocado on a boxspring. However, foundations do not have internal springs, making them ideal for beds and frames that require a base layer under the mattress.

Note: Every Avocado Green Mattress Topper is handmade in California, using the same quantity of natural and organic materials appropriate for each mattress size. As such, subtle size variations may occur, as is characteristic of any handmade product.

  • Are fire retardants used in your natural latex mattress toppers?

Our Avocado Green Latex Mattress Toppers do not use any natural or chemical-based flame retardants.

Mattress toppers are not required to be burn tested with an open flame to meet 16 C.F.R. Part 1632: Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads

  • Can I remove the ticking on my topper and wash it in the washing machine?

The outer quilted layer on an Avocado Natural Latex Topper features a brass zipper, which is intended to make it easy to readjust the internal 2-inch GOLS organic certified latex layer, in the event that it needs to be repositioned.

This zipper also makes it possible to remove the outer ticking layer entirely. Even so, we do not recommend washing this outer layer in a washing machine. It's bulky and the GOTS organic certified cotton and canvas base layers may shrink.

Instead, it is best to spot clean it with natural cleaners.

General Questions

  • What is a hybrid mattress?

Hybrid mattress combines an innerspring system with foam or latex to deliver the benefits of both technologies. Hybrids allow sleepers to enjoy the perfect blend of sturdy support and contouring comfort. They are typically more flexible and durable.

The Avocado Green Mattress is a "Natural Hybrid" — since we use GOLS organic certified latex combined with a state-of-the-art innerspring unit.

  • Do you make custom sizes?

At present, we do not make custom sizes for antique bed frames, RVs or boats. However, we hope to be able to do so in the near future!

  • Why is there plastic wrap on the mattress? Is it recyclable?

This is an active project at Avocado. We are researching plant-based plastics and other biodegradable alternatives to the plastic wrap that we currently use, but have not been able to find a solution that has the required tensile strength. That being said, we would like to remove even the plastic wrap from our packaging, so we are researching and field-testing alternatives.

Until then, some background on what we use now:

The plastic wrap used to wrap our compressed and rolled mattresses, before they are inserted into the shipping box, is Plastic type #4 – LDPE, also known as Low Density Polyethylene. Low density polyethylene is most often found in squeezable bottles, shopping bags, clothing, carpet, frozen food, bread bags, medical tubing and some food wraps. ♶ is considered one of the safest types of plastic.

No polycarbonate (resin identification codes ♳, ♵, ♷ and ♹) are used. These are most often cited as the types of plastic to avoid.

    Please recycle!

Please recycle. ♶ is recyclable, and is often made into compost bins, paneling, trash can liners and cans, floor tiles, and shipping envelopes. It can often be recycled in most neighborhood curbside recycling programs, as well as at your local grocery store where shopping bags are recycled. We highly encourage you to make recycling the plastic wrap and the shipping carton a priority.

  • Where are the Gwen and Reed mattress models?

The Reed is our standard Avocado Green Mattress.

The Gwen is our Avocado Green Mattress with the optional pillow-top.

Why the change? We simplified our naming conventions to make it easier for our customers. The products have not changed in any way.

  • How can your mattresses be so fresh?

Most other companies mass produce their mattresses, import them in containers, and/or store them in smelly warehouses. Not us.

Avocado Green Mattresses are handmade in Los Angeles, by a highly skilled team that's paid a just and living wage. And because we own our own 275,000 sq. ft. factory, we marry the latest lean manufacturing methods with green processes to minimize waste, reduce our carbon footprint, and keep our inventory as fresh as possible. Perhaps that's why we are the #1 rated mattress in America. 😃

  • Can an eco-luxury mattress or topper really fit in that box? What size is the shipping box?

Yes! Mattress technology has changed so much in the past decade. Even high-end mattresses like ours can be easily shipped to your home compressed in a box.

Our mattresses ship via FedEx or deliver with optional in-home delivery and setup services compressed in a box.

The zipper may be left open, just a few inches, to reveal the legal tag and show you how to access the contents inside. Simply tuck the tag inside and close the zipper.

  • Can I purchase pillow refill?

Our non toxic pillows come voluptuously stuffed, delivering a medium-plush feel. However, if you prefer to change the feel of your existing pillow — or simply extend its life — it’s easy. A convenient zipper on our pillows allows you to add fill and adjust it to meet your ideal stuffing volume, firmness and sleeping preferences. For proper head, neck and shoulder support, this can make a significant difference in your sleep experience.

Our Green Pillow Refills ship in a handy, reusable canvas bag, and contain either 1/2 pound or 1 pound of stuffing, made in Los Angeles from the same upcycled organic latex shreds and organic Kapok tree fiber that we use in our best-selling pillows. The 1/2 pound refill bag is enough to add volume to one pillow, whereas the 1 pound refill bag is generally enough for two pillows. (For reference, our Standard pillow uses 3 pounds of fill; the Queen uses 4 pounds; and the King, 5 pounds.)

  • Can I wash my Avocado Green Pillow?

Do not put your Avocado Green Pillow in the washing machine. This will void the one-year product warranty and the sleep trial. The best course of action is to spot-treat any stains, preferably as they happen, and to use a pillow cover to extend its life.

Should additional pillow fill be required, we offer 1/2 pound and 1 pound pillow refill bags for sale.

Bed Frames & Furniture

Bed Frame & Furniture Information

  • Which bed frame is right for me?

    Eco Wood Bed Frame

Our Eco Wood Bed Frame has been designed to offer an elevated platform without the need for a headboard. With a minimal design, it features 10 inches of clearance under the side rails of the bed — a space ideal for storage. But because the platform is 16 inches off the ground, it may not be suitable for younger toddlers or children, who could be at risk for rolling out of bed, or for individuals that have difficulty getting in and out of bed. For a lower, more accessible platform, our Natural Wood Bed Frame is a great option. Our Eco Wood Bed Frame is ideally suited to effortlessly support an Avocado mattress, while allowing for ample airflow.

    Natural Wood Bed Frame

Our Natural Wood Bed Frame offers a low platform, but also reduces or eliminates the space under the rails for potential storage. However, it does features a substantial headboard, with a more traditional aesthetic. Our Natural Wood Bed Frame will easily support an Avocado mattress, while permitting allowing for ample airflow through the slats.

  • What color stain option is shown on your reclaimed wood bed frame product pages?

Our Natural Wood Bed Frame and our Eco Wood Bed Frames are both available in Rustic Raw. Rustic Raw reveals the most natural character of the old growth hardwood used and is simply sealed with a zero-VOC sealer. No stain is used on the Rustic Raw bed frames.

All of the product shots on our bed frame product pages show the Rustic Raw.

Please note: we maintain an inventory of our bed frames, so they ship within 1 week. Shipping, coordination and white glove delivery & setup require approximately 10 business days.

  • What do the color stain finishing options on your furniture look like?

Our reclaimed Furniture (Bed Frames, Dressers and End Tables) is available in Rustic Raw. It is sealed and contains no finishing stain.

As you would expect from Avocado, it is non-toxic, has no traditional paint or polyurethane odor, and contain no solvents (such as Formaldehyde and Toluene) to off-gas into the air.

  • How Do I Assemble My Natural Wood or Eco Wood Bed Frame?

Our Natural Wood Bed Frame and our Eco Wood Bed Frames include in-home delivery and setup. Even so, it can be helpful to know how to assemble the bed frames and reverse the process for disassembly. The process for both bed frames is similar, and does not require tools. However, it easier for two people to manage the process, and some of the components can be heavy.

    1. Unbox the components.

    2. Snap the metal hook fasteners in the side rails into the metal slot fasteners in the footboard and headboard rails. Modest down pressure will lock them snugly into place.

    3. The side rails have crenellations, which will hold the bed slats firmly in place.

    4. Drop the pine wood slats into place within the crenellations along the side rails.

    5. The bed is now is now ready for use. (A foundation or box spring is not needed.) Below is the completed Eco Wood Bed Frame.

Below is the completed Natural Wood Bed Frame, which features a lower profile and higher headboard.

Mattress Health, Safety & Sustainability

  • Do you use wool as a fire or flame retardant in your mattress?

We use GOTS organic certified and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® wool as a fire retardant in our Avocado Green Mattress.

It is important to note that wool is often used as a fire retardant material in many other "natural" mattress brands because it is commonly considered non-flammable in its natural state. Testing over many years has confirmed that the high keratin protein and moisture content of wool do make it naturally resistant to burning. It is difficult to set alight under most conditions, and burns only weakly, forming a cold char which tends to extinguish burning. Test have shown wool to be among the safest of bedding materials.

That being said, some "green mattress" manufacturers treat their wool with flame-retarding chemicals, yet still, claim that their wool is 100% natural. They do so to ensure that they pass flammability tests.

At Avocado, we do not add any (toxic) flame-retarding chemicals to our wool.

Even so, wool’s inherent chemical structure makes wool naturally flame resistant. Wool is harder to ignite than many common textile fibers. While cotton catches alight at 255°C, the temperature must reach 570-600°C before wool will ignite.

Because an Avocado Vegan Mattress does not use wool, we use natural hydrated silica as a fire retardant barrier, which meets and exceeds all US standards for flammability.

Hydrated silica has a long history of safe use, even as an ingredient in food products. It’s listed by the US Food & Drug Administration to be Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) and has no known toxicity or carcinogenicity. (Tom’s of Maine® even uses it in their toothpaste.) Hydrated Silica acts as an effective and natural fire barrier on both sides of our mattresses.

  • Can you show me your burn test lab results for fire safety?

    Avocado Vegan Mattress:

Because an Avocado Vegan Mattress does not use wool, it uses a natural hydrated silica (based on quartz sand), to ensure annual compliance with 16 CFR 1633Test results and certifications are posted below.

  • What do you wash your wool in?
Our 100% GOTS Organic Certified and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® Wool goes through many different stages of GOTS compliant processing, before arriving at your doorstep in the form of the final product. The first amongst them is called Scouring (washing).

For scouring, or simply washing, the primary medium of washing is water, heated to a temperature of about 65 degrees Celsius. To facilitate this, help is taken of a GOTS approved surfactant. We are using IGSURF-3399, which is manufactured by Indian Glycols Ltd. and certified by Control Union (CU) and thus, meets the most stringent norms. It is added to the water in the defined ratios. The surfactant helps in the removal of all the dirt and soil from the wool.

Following this, the wool is then treated with fresh water, and then rinsed and dried for further production processes.

According to the manufacturer of the surfactant:

“IGSURF-3399 is a GOTS approved, non APEO based eco-friendly emulsifier, scouring/wetting agent for the processing of wool, cotton and blended fibers. This product is specially designed based on fatty alcohol alkoxylates suitable for high temperature application.

IGSURF-3399 is free from Alkyl Phenol. It removes the sizing chemicals, dirts, soils, stains from the fibers because of its high detergency property. The detergency of IGSURF-3399 is due to the optimization of its HLB value and hydrophobic chain length. Its surface wetting property enhances the pretreatment process. IGSURF-3399 is primarily biodegradable.”

  • Do you use toxic flame retardants?

    No, we do not.

Ensuring that your mattress is non-flammable is a requirement in the United States, but the fire retardants used by most mattress manufacturers are not entirely “safe.” Most of the chemicals used are known to cause organ toxicity, hair loss and other neurological damage.

So why do some companies continue to use them? Because they’re inexpensive.

The Avocado Green Mattress is different. It uses only natural materials, such as pure 100% GOTS organic certified and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® wool as a natural fire barrier. Because an Avocado Vegan Mattress does not use wool, it has hydrated-silica sand (which is basically crushed quartz and opal gemstones). These natural materials char and self-extinguish without the use of toxic chemicals and meet and exceed all US standards for flammability standards and safety.

  • What keeps your mattress layers from shifting without using chemical adhesives in the comfort layers?

Avocado mattresses feature our distinctive, hand-tufted rosettes made from 100% GOTS organic certified wool.

Hand-tufting is a time-honored technique dating back to the 17th century. It’s also highly functional. It prevents trenches and lumps from appearing over time. And wool tufts act as anchors by pulling yarn through each layer of the mattress. This secures them in place without the use of dangerous chemical adhesives between the comfort layers of GOTS Organic Certified cotton ticking, GOTS Organic Certified wool and GOLS Organic Certified latex (our cotton, wool and latex are also STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®).

    The Hand Tufting Process

Tufting is the last step in the production process for our mattress. It begins with 10 - 17 inch steel tufting needles, which are threaded with fabric tape, then anchored by decorative yarn rosettes made from organic wool.

Next, the mattress is placed in a specialized mattress compactor, which firmly holds and compresses the mattress, while it is turned to a vertical orientation. This makes it easier for a two-person team to perform the manual tufting work.

The process is time-consuming. The threaded steel tufting needles are punched through all of the layers of the mattress, one by one, in a carefully prescribed and alternating pattern, before being tied and anchored at the bottom with anchors made from organic wool felt.

Once the mattress is fully tufted, the compressor releases the mattress. It then expands and the tufts are pulled taught. This gives the mattress those beautiful undulations and its distinctive luxury appearance. 😀

  • Do you have any California Proposition 65 warnings due to potential cancer causing chemicals in your products?

We do not have any California Proposition 65 warnings on our products.

As background and more information, the following information is from the
    American Cancer Center Website

California’s Proposition 65, also called the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, was enacted in 1986. It is intended to help Californians make informed decisions about protecting themselves from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

Labels warning that a product contains compounds that may cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm are required on many household items sold in California. But people all over the country see them because many companies put the labels on all items that contain these compounds, even if they’re to be sold in other states. The warning labels can be found on many kinds of products, such as electrical wires, jewelry, padlocks, dishes, flashlights, and pesticides, to name just a few.

As part of the law, businesses selling products to people in California must provide “clear and reasonable warnings” before knowingly exposing people to any chemical on the list, unless the expected level of exposure would pose no significant cancer risk. This warning is often in the form of a label on the product or its packaging.

For a fully updated list of all the chemicals and compounds that are known to the State of California to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity, click here.

  • What is off-gassing?

Have you heard friends and family complain about “off-gassing” when talking about their new mattress? Most of these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are to blame, and it’s pretty frightening to think about breathing them in through the night. After all, we do spend about ⅓ of our lives asleep and in our beds. Scarier yet is that too much exposure to these volatile organic compounds has been linked to health problems from chest irritation to cancer. Mattresses made with petroleum-based polyurethane, chemical adhesives and chemical fire retardants off-gas. That's why it is important to do your research when buying a new mattress, and choose a brand that you can trust.

  • Do your mattresses emit a gas or chemical odor?

Any mattresses made with petroleum-based foams, memory foams, chemical adhesives and chemical flame retardants will "off-gas" — which means that they release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) as they age.

However, we do not use polyurethane foams, memory foams, chemical flame retardants or chemical adhesives between the comfort layers of our mattresses. Instead, we use GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex, GOTS organic certified wool, and GOTS organic certified cotton. These materials are GREENGUARD Gold certified for low emissions and quality assurance by UL Environment and hold STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certifications.

In particularly humid climates, you may notice a very slight natural odor when your mattress arrives, which will dissipate quickly. This is because your mattress has been sealed after it was made in order to facilitate shipping. This is natural and not a chemical odor.

  • What is hydrated silica and how is it made?

    What is hydrated silica?

Hydrated silica is naturally derived from silica (silicon dioxide), an abundant compound that forms about 12% of the earth's surface.

    How is it made?

Silica is crystalline as it occurs in nature. Sand and obsidian are common forms. The sand is heated with sodium carbonate and dissolved in water to form liquid sodium silicate. The liquid sodium silicate is mixed with acid and precipitated to make hydrated silica, which is an odorless, tasteless white powder. The hydrated silica is then milled in the United States, and based on the particle size of the material can be used for a variety of different applications.

    Is it safe?

Hydrated silica has a long history of safe use as an ingredient in food products. It is listed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to be Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS).

    How is it used?

Our hydrated silica is chemically inert and used as part of our non-toxic natural flame retardant system in our Avocado Vegan Mattress.

  • Is your natural hydrated silica made in a facility that also produces crystalline silica?

No. Our natural hydrated silica is manufactured in a U.S. facility that does not produce crystalline silica in any capacity.

  • Can I use an electric heating mattress pad with my Avocado natural latex mattress?

Unlike memory foam and many polyurethane and synthetic foams, organic latex — which is used in our Avocado Green Mattresses — does not tend to retain heat. At the same time, the organic latex layers we use are located under the organic wool and ticking, so there is no direct contact between the mattress pad heater and latex. So, yes, a mattress pad heater can be used at a low to moderate setting, if it is your preference or necessary for a medical condition. But please note that extended (all night) and repeated use may discolor the exterior ticking over time, which would not be covered under the terms of our 25-year limited warranty.

Of course, it would be our general preference to use quality natural and organic bedding, rather than an electric mattress pad, if your goal is simply to stay warm and toasty at night.

  • How do you pick a mattress for a growing child? What firmness is best?

Growing kids need lots of sleep; anywhere from 10-14 hours per day depending on their age. That's because their growing bodies and minds need quality rest to stay refreshed, alert and focused.

When considering a mattress for a child, here are 5 factors to consider:

    1. Size: Picking the right size mattress for your child is not as straightforward as it may seem. Although a Twin mattress is the most popular size for young children, a Twin XL may better suit taller children (although beds can be more challenging to find). Many of our customers prefer a Full- or Queen-sized mattress, since it allows for more freedom of movement and room for growth.
    2. Materials: Children are especially susceptible to chemical off-gassing, industrial chemicals, pesticides and other industrial chemicals. You should avoid mattresses that contain petroleum-based polyurethane foams, memory foams, vinyl, chemical fire retardants and chemical adhesives. Obviously, we recommend a mattress that uses natural and hypoallergenic materials like organic latex, organic wool and organic cotton. (If you're concerned about the rare potential of allergic reactions, these can be tested for in advance by your allergist.)
    3. Honesty & Quality: Don't take a manufacturer's marketing claims at face value. Ask to see the legal tag, which details what's actually inside the mattress. Also carefully consider their green and eco-friendly certifications. And make sure that they have a rock-solid sleep trial, free return policy, and non-prorated warranty. A quality brand will stand behind their product.
    4. Firmness: Even if a pillow-top mattress looks and feels comfortable to you, most young children don't weigh enough to compress the layers, and as a result, wouldn't feel the difference until they are older (when they weigh more). So don't feel obligated to invest in a pillow-top mattress. They key is to ensure that they have gentle, yet firm sleep surface for proper spinal support and alignment for their growing bodies. (Both of our mattresses nicely fit within this profile range.)
    5. Durability: A quality mattress, especially those with natural materials and an internal support coil system, will last for many years. That's why choosing a firm, long lasting product is essential. To protect your investment, we suggest investing in a mattress cover to guard against accidents and stains.

  • How do you select a mattress for children and adolescents with ADHD?

Children and adolescents with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity and oppositional symptoms have unique sleep needs.

Research shows that children with ADHD and related conditions have higher rates of daytime sleepiness than children without ADHD. For children with ADHD, poor sleep (too little sleep or symptoms of sleep disorders) may profoundly impact their symptoms.

However, another study found that treating sleep problems may be enough to reduce or even eliminate attention and hyperactivity issues for some children. As a result, choosing the right mattress for children with ADHD and related issues is particularly important.

Mattresses with petroleum-based polyurethanes, chemical fire retardants, chemical adhesives, chemical fire retardants (or "Tris"), mercury, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde and phthalates should be avoided.

Eco-conscious mattresses made with natural and organic materials are highly recommended.

  • Can you show me your GOLS Organic Latex certification?

We're happy to share our Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certification issued from Control Union directly to Avocado Green Brands.

The GOLS standard addresses criteria for natural rubber from certified organic plantations (USDA NOP or EU) that is processed at manufacturing units. To achieve GOLS certification, a product must contain more than 95% of certified organic raw material. The GOLS standard features permissible limits for harmful substances, emission test requirements and polymer and filler percentages. Rubber plantations as well as processing units up to the final retailer are certified according to the standard. By using transaction certificates at every sale of a product in the supply chain, traceability from the plantation to the final retailer is ensured.

How You Benefit from GOLS Organic Certified Latex

GOLS establishes a clear path and procedure on the route from field or farmer level to the certified organic latex product manufacturer. Among other factors, manufacturers that are given approval to produce organic products under the GOLS logo have to follow mandatory social and environmental regulations. This places indirect responsibility for social and environmental issues on the final consumer.

  • Can You Show Me Your GOTS Organic Certification?

To view our certification, categories and product specifications, view our public profile on the Global Organic Textile Standard database.

  • Can I see your current Greenguard Gold Certification from UL Environment?

Our current GREENGUARD Gold Certification® from UL Environment is below, as well as a picture our Twin-sized pillow-top mattress during the 168-hour environmental chamber testing.

Our mattress was monitored for emissions of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), formaldehyde, total aldehydes, and other individual volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over a 168 hour exposure period. These emissions were measured and the resultant air concentrations were determined for each of the potential pollutants. Determination of compliance is based on predicted air concentrations modeled using the GREENGUARD program standard which include a standard room loading and EPA ventilation conditions. Product loading is based on a standard mattress usage (2.6 m²) in a 34.9 m³ room.

  • Can I see your MADE SAFE® certification?

Our MADE SAFE® Statement of Certification for our Green Mattress, Mattress ToppersGreen Pillows and Organic Cotton Mattress Pad Protectors is below.

  • Does your cotton ticking fabric use certified organic cotton? Do you use polyester in your ticking?

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world's leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.

The cotton fabric ticking that wraps our mattresses, pillows and toppers is made with only 100% GOTS certified organic cotton.
    No polyester is used.

  • What’s the eco-INSTITUT®?

Based in Germany, the eco-INSTITUT is a label marking products that meet the strictest requirements for emissions and pollutants. The eco-INSTITUT label has been developed according to the latest state of the art and also product group standards defined by the organization. This organization seeks to provide:

    • Safety and no health risks due to comprehensive emission and toxicological testing
    • Healthier products and thus less toxicological contamination in your home
    • Advice on shopping decisions due to additional product information

We’re proud to meet these standards for our customers, as they mean a better life for you and a healthier environment by making a minimal impact.

Due to weight, our King Standard, King Pillow-top, California King Standard or California King Pillow-top mattresses cannot ship via FedEx® — our standard service for free shipping. For these instances, our shipping partner, AGS®, provides "curbside" (a.k.a. "threshold") delivery services.

However, while the industry’s generic term is “curbside”, the mattress carton will be placed adjacent to your front door, or if there are stairs, at the bottom of the stairs.

Please note: For King Standard, King Pillow-top, California King Standard or California King Pillow-top orders that receive the free curbside delivery option, appointments are scheduled online. Customers will receive an email directly from our shipping partner, AGS, to schedule delivery.

Note: With curbside delivery, in-home setup services and mattress removal of your existing set is not included, and can not be arranged on-site if curbside delivery services have been selected. For these upgraded services, opt for "In-Home Delivery & Setup" when making your initial purchase.

  • What is the difference between free shipping and in-home delivery?

We can ship your mattress for free compressed in a triple-reinforced box to anywhere in the US. (Click here for shipping & delivery times.)

Natural mattresses like the Avocado can be heavy.

If you would like assistance moving your new mattress, we also offer in-home delivery for just $199 more. Our service partners will contact you directly to schedule a time to deliver your mattress within a 4-hour window. Please note: Your mattress will still arrive compressed in a box in order to facilitate easier moving up stairwells and around corners. Our service partners can also remove your old mattress at no additional charge, and they will install your new mattress in the room of your choice. ☺

  • Do you offer in-home delivery on weekends?

    Not at this time.

Our in-home deliveries are normally scheduled between the hours of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, weekdays. Deliveries are typically scheduled within a 4-hour service window.

  • Will you remove my existing mattress and foundation?

Yes, if you order your Avocado Green Mattress with our option in-home delivery, we are happy to remove your existing mattress and mattress boxspring or mattress foundation at no additional charge.

We can not remove bed frames, bed platforms, or other bedroom related furniture.

  • How do I take my mattress out of the box? When can I sleep on it?

To Open Your Avocado Green Mattress:

    1. Move the box to the room where your new mattress will ultimately be placed. Because we use natural materials (which weigh more than polyurethane foams), you may be surprised by how heavy your new mattress is. When moving it, especially the larger sizes, the work is best done by two people.
    2. Open the brown shipping box at the top, within two weeks of receiving your mattress. Your mattress will be sealed inside within two layers of plastic.
    3. Slide the mattress out of the box, by laying the box on its side.
    4. Find the edge of the white layer of plastic and begin to unroll the outer white layer of plastic only, and remove it from the mattress. The mattress will still be sealed within a second layer of plastic. Do not cut both layers of plastic at the same time, or the mattress will immediately begin to expand while rolled.
    5. Unroll the mattress and position it — either on the floor or on your bed frame — in a spot where it has ample room for it to expand to full size.
    6. Finally, carefully cut the remaining clear layer of plastic and remove it from the mattress. The mattress will fill to full size rather quickly (but not in any dangerous or alarming way). Call in friends and family members, as this is especially fun to watch. Within 30 minutes, you can lay on your new mattress. Within a few hours, your mattress will be fully expanded.

    1. To be green, we use brown shipping boxes with minimal branding. The money we save on printing and producing boxes helps us to fund our charitable and giving initiatives to nonprofits within 1% For the Planet®. We encourage you to read about them on our website.
    2. All mattresses are sent compressed — for both FedEx delivery and our optional in-home delivery & setup service. We have found it keeps them safer during transport, and makes it far easier to move them up stairs and around corners (without marking walls) while they are still compressed.
    3. Any wrinkles will disappear within a few days.
    4. Because we do not use polyurethane foam, the corners may be the last areas of the mattress to fully decompress. If you prefer to hasten the process, you can simply lift each corner and give it a little shake, while holding the top edge.
    5. Some customers may experience a soft, sweet, vanilla-like smell after opening their mattress. It will disappear. This is a result of the organic materials used (latex, wool and cotton), which have been vacuum-sealed within the plastic just after the mattress was made. It is not harmful in any way.
    6. Please recycle the plastic wrapping (LDPE #4) and the shipping box! (FYI: We are actively working on sourcing a plant-based wrapping material with sufficient tensile strength to replace the current plastic wrap. We hope to change this soon.)

Trial, Warranty, Returns, Payment & Guarantees

100 Night Sleep Trial

  • How does your 1-Year Risk-Free Sleep Trial work?

All Avocado Green Mattresses purchased directly from us come with a risk-free 1-year sleep trial.

For Avocado Green Mattresses, here’s how it works:

    1. Try the mattress for up to 1 year. Your trial starts at your delivery date.
    2. Read our Sleep Trial Success Tips article, which provides valuable insights and solutions to common issues.
    3. Not Satisfied? Contact us. We will give you a call to gather some feedback and give us a chance to make it right! Please note: It takes time to adjust to any new mattress. Although we do not put requirements on how long you must sleep on your new mattress before requesting a Sleep Trial Return, we do respectfully ask that you give it a fair and honest trial to see if you sleep more deeply, breathe more easily and wake more refreshed and energized as you adjust to your new mattress. Should you wish to proceed with a return, we will work with you to arrange everything. There are no charges for restocking or return pickups.
    4. For mattress returns, our support team will transfer you to our sustainability team for the donation process. Please be patient as the process for finding and arranging for a donation can take time. We love a team effort and welcome leads that you might have for donation in your area! If we cannot secure a place for donation, we will make every effort to recycle the mattress (in very rare cases recycling facilities are not available). Returned mattresses are never resold. You do not have to box or ship the mattress back to us.
    5. Refunds are paid AFTER the mattress is RECEIVED in good condition by Avocado Mattress for recycling or charitable donation, or a charitable donation is verified. Verification is with a receipt and photo of the donation since in most cases a 3rd party organization will pick-up the mattress. This is to eliminate the gray market of returned mattresses.
    6. Exclusions: (1) If you finance your mattress via Affirm, you’ll receive a full refund from us, but we can not refund financing fees paid to date directly to Affirm. (2) The risk-free sleep trial is limited to two mattresses per household. Why the limit? Most other direct-to-consumer mattress companies charge for return shipping or restocking fees. They hide these sneaky fees within their terms and conditions to limit returns by making the cost and hassle too high for the customer to proceed. We do not. On the contrary, we cover everything and make returns easy. Purchases at Avocado are truly risk-free. (3) Products must be in a condition suitable for donation to be eligible for return (i.e., no stains, tears, excessive odors or soiling). We request photo(s) to confirm that your mattress is in appropriate condition to be donated. Protect your mattress with our Organic Mattress Pad Protector. (4) This 1-year trial period is effective for purchases made on or after June 28, 2019. Purchases made prior to that date remain within a 100-night trial period.

  • What success tips can you share for my sleep trial?

    Avocado Mattress Care Guide

Switching to a new mattress is a big life change. After all, you'll spend one-third of it in bed, so making sure that your new mattress lives up to expectations is important, especially to your health and wellbeing.

Our 1-Year Sleep Trial Program allows you to try your Avocado Green or Vegan mattress in the comfort of your home, without risk. During this trial period, it's to be expected that you'll have questions — about the required support for the mattress, firmness levels, staying cool, and so on. This article proactively addresses these issues to help ensure that your sleep trial experience exceeds expectations.

Setting Up Your Mattress? Extra Hands are Helpful.

If you did not opt for in-home delivery & setup, please note that an Avocado mattress can be heavy. Depending on the size, two people may be required to move the mattress. Take care when lifting to avoid personal injury and/or damage to the mattress. Use the reinforced handles on each side to move and rotate your mattress, but not for lengthy carrying. Any natural scent will dissipate after a few days.

Checking Dimensions? Although Slight Variations Can Occur, Your Mattress Will Relax and Expand to Proper Dimensions. Just Give it Some Time.

Our mattresses are handmade to precise dimensions, but slight variances are normal. It's truly a handmade product. However, during roll-packing and transportation, some contraction may occur. This is also the result of how our mattresses are made — with natural and organic fibers, but without glues between the comfort layers and without the use of polyurethane foams. (This is one of the main reasons why you bought our mattress, after all.) Rest assured, your new mattress will relax and expand to proper dimensions after being used for a short while.

Got a Supportive Base? It's Essential.

The Avocado mattress features the industry's best support system — a Quantum Edge® Elite Combi-Zone® by Leggett & Platt. This is the highest-end support unit made. It contains between 756 (Twin) to 1,414 (King) fabric-encased innersprings — arranged in three strategic zones with a reinforced perimeter — that float independently to facilitate airflow, alleviate pressure points and ensure proper spinal alignment. Simply put, a great internal support system makes all the difference.

However, to fully realize the benefit of this exemplary support system, your mattress also needs to be properly supported. If your base flexes or sags, your new mattress will contour to it, just as it does with your body.

For bed frames that use slats, each slat should be arranged no less than 5" apart. (For heavier individuals and couples, 3 inches is recommended) These slats should be strong, non-flexible and wide enough to create a stable, non-yielding platform. As a case in point, the reclaimed wood bed frames that we sell use slats that are 1.5 inches thick and 3.5 inches wide. A center support for wider bed frames may be required as well. Logically, slat systems or foundations that feature flexible or concave slat systems should be avoided. Don't have enough slats or your slats are not the right size? Relax. Your local hardware store can likely cut them to measure for you. (Pro Tip: If you have an existing slat, take it with you. It makes cutting new slats to match the length and height easy.)

How do you know if your foundation or bed base is not providing the proper support? Try positioning your new mattress on the floor for one night. Yes, this can be awkward and our mattresses are heavy. But if this solves your issue or stops you mattress from appearing to sag in the middle, it's worth it. You'll discover your supports are the issue, not the mattress. And now you know what to fix.

Too Springy? Ditch Your Old Box Spring.

Can you use your existing flexible box spring with your new Avocado mattress? Technically, yes, but we strongly discourage it. Why? Because a box spring is made with a heavy gauge spring system and is designed to flex and give with an "old school" innerspring mattress on top of it.

Because an Avocado mattress is a hybrid — which means it combines latex cushioning with an internal innerspring support — a box spring will make the mattress too bouncy for most people. Edge support will also be significantly diminished. If you want to experience how switching from an "old-school" box spring to a more stable support structure (i.e., a bed with slats, foundation, platform bed, etc.), try repositioning your mattress on the floor for one night, if you have the room and an extra set of strong hands to help. The support and sleep experience will be radically different and improved.

Neck, Shoulder or Back Pain? Get the Right Pillows.

Using an old pillow with your new mattress? A proper pillow is more than an indulgence, it provides proper support for your head, neck and upper back. In short, a great pillow will help keep your spine properly aligned and prevent neck pain. If your pillow is more than 2-3 years old, it's time to replace them.

For back sleepers, a firmer pillow is ideal to help maintain the proper alignment or curve of your neck and head, according to a 2015 study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. Our Avocado Green Pillows should be ideal. In the event that you would like your pillows to be even firmer, additional pillow fill can be added. Adding pillow fill can also be used to extend the life of your pillows.

For side sleepers — especially those with preexisting issues of shoulder or hip pain — a medium-loft pillow tends to work best. When using an adjustable Avocado Green Pillow, you may want to remove a very modest amount of fill. A zipper on the side of the pillow provides easy access. You may also benefit from using a pillow between your knees or a body pillow. This will help minimize the twisting of your hips, prevent your upper leg from pulling your spine out of alignment and reduce stress on your hips and lower back. (Our pillow-top mattress and our mattress toppers will be particularly effective for side sleepers, by alleviating pressure points.)

For stomach sleepers, who keep their face very close to the mattress, a thinner pillow works well. Too much loft could leave your neck sore. When using an adjustable Avocado Green Pillow, try removing some fill to suit your preference.

Hip or Shoulder Pain? Try a Few Changes.

Suffering from back- or nerve-related pain? Do you have a history of hip or shoulder pain during the night, or numbness in the shoulder when you wake? These issues may be partly attributed to your sleeping position, which is causing your spine to be misaligned. It could also be restricting blood flow to your limbs, pinching a nerve or causing pressure in your shoulder or hip area. Regardless, these issues are generally not the fault of the mattress. Transitioning to a mattress that is too soft may immediately alleviate your hip or shoulder pain, but may create new back, neck and shoulder pain over time.

That's why Doctors, Chiropractors and Sleep Professionals typically recommend natural latex and hybrid mattress designs to best address these specific conditions. Even so, for customers with existing hip or shoulder pain, no mattress can be expected to completely eliminate your condition. But choosing the right mattress, like our Avocado pillow-top model, can make a significant and positive impact. Some customers have added our plush mattress topper and realized immediate and lasting relief.

"My husband who is a 50+ Triathlete said this was the first bed he has woken up pain-free. No hip issues or leg pain! Sweet dreams on winning in his age group!"
    — Laura B.

"We were looking for a mattress to relieve hip and lower back pain. Took Consumer Report's top rating and ordered firm mattress topper. Couldn't be more satisfied. No more morning aches or pains!"
    — Lee M.

"I LOVE my Avocado Green Mattress! I’m a side sleeper, so I bought the pillow top mattress and no longer wake up with back or hip pain. I sleep soundly, no more tossing and turning, and wake up feeling ready to start my day."
    — Pauline L.

"We have bought and returned four mattresses in the last two years. My spouse has terrible body pain at night. We finally found Avocado Green....,..free at last. We both sleep well and I sleep pain-free. Thank you!"
    — Karen M.

Trouble Adjusting? Give it 30 Nights.

How long will it take to adjust to your new mattress? Although some customers are "over the moon" on the first night, we recommend at least 30 nights, to manage expectations. (Your sleep trial gives you 100 nights, so there is no rush.) Why 30 nights? For some people, it takes time for their body to adjust, especially if they are transitioning from a foam mattress or an old mattress that had lost its support. In these scenarios, we know that a little time works wonders. In fact, so many of our 5-star product reviews offer confirmation.

Sleeping Hot? First, Check Your Bedding.

The material design of an Avocado mattress has been crafted to help you sleep cool, encourage airflow and wick moisture. So, if you're sleeping hot, it is likely not the mattress. First, check other contributing factors and make appropriate changes:

Are your sheets thick or made of synthetic fibers or non-breathable microfibers? If so, try lighter weight sheets. We also strongly recommend switching to certified organic cotton or other natural woven materials. Natural woven sheets are more temperature stable. On warm days, they will feel cool; on cold days, they will feel warm. (As a bonus, cotton is a hypoallergenic fabric, so it's best for people who have trouble with skin irritations or allergies.) Our Customer Experience Team knows that sheets are a key component to a cool night's sleep.

Are you using a comforter or duvet filled with down or feathers? Try removing it, or switching to a lighter weight, natural blanket or cover. What may seem like a luxury, may actually be trapping too much body heat.

Is your mattress on a non-breathable platform base? Platforms provide the proper support, but in some instances, completely cut off much-needed airflow (which actually occurs through the base of the mattress). If you can't easily switch to a different bed base, try using a Coconut Coir Mattress Bed Pad. They're a great eco-friendly option and generally made of extra-firm natural coconut fiber infused with natural latex. Coconut Coir Mattress Pads are porous and allow for greater air circulation between the bottom of your mattress and your platform bed’s surface. For humid environments, they can make a big difference, and even be used with slatted bed frames. (If you are going to put your mattress directly on the floor for an extended period, a Coconut Coir Mattress Pad is essential.)

Are you using a waterproof mattress pad made with plastic? Although they can be used, they will reduce the benefits of sleeping on a natural mattress. Waterproof mattress protectors are designed to create a "foolproof" moisture barrier. However, by cutting off the flow of moisture, you're also completely cutting off the natural flow of air. As a result, the natural moisture wicking and temperature regulating properties of the wool and cotton in your mattress are locked away under the waterproof mattress pad. Instead, try using a more breathable mattress protector or pad, an under-blanket, or no mattress protector at, if a waterproof barrier is not an essential requirement.

Do you have too many covers? In this case, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that less really is better.

"We love this mattress. I used to get really hot at night, but since we switched to the Avocado that problem has totally disappeared."
    — Megan M.

"Cannot thank Avocado enough for literally the best mattress I have purchased and slept on for so many years. Pillow Top Mattress sleeps very cool with a soft touch pillow top and medium hybrid support that does not swallow you up... I could not ask for anything better."
    — Michael B.

Is Your Mattress Too Firm or Too Soft? Try a Topper.

If your mattress feels too firm, first make sure that your fitted sheet is not too tight (or small) for your Avocado Green Mattress. Our mattresses are between 11 and 13 inches tall, depending on the model. A fitted sheet that's too small will pull the mattress tight, like a drum.

For other situations, consider a mattress topper. Our support team can help ensure you select the right model.

Our natural latex mattress toppers are designed to rest on top of your existing mattress. Mattress toppers can substantially change the comfort profile of your existing mattress, contour to your body's natural curves with added cushioning and luxury. Our natural latex mattress toppers are available in both plush and firm options. Yes, we also offer a vegan mattress topper option made without wool. 😀

    Body Impressions? Consider the Wool.

First, be sure to rotate your mattress once per month, for the first six months of use. Simply use the reinforced handles to rotate your mattress from head to toe. After the first six months, rotate your mattress once every other month. This will help ensure an even sleep surface on your new mattress. It may be helpful to note that an Avocado Mattress has been independently tested by Leggett Labs® to be one of the most durable mattresses in the industry, experiencing approximately only a 1% reduction in height after 10 years of hard simulated usage.

Second, consider the wool or cotton under the ticking. Our Green Mattresses uses a generous layer of organic, non-crimped wool — 1 ounce per square foot. (Wool is measured by volume, not thickness.) Our Vegan mattress uses cotton, instead of wool. In both cases, this generous layer is designed to wick moisture, encourage airflow, and help keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

After you begin to sleep on your new mattress, the wool or cotton will gently compress and may give the false impression that a body indentation has formed, or there is a defect in the mattress. This is almost never the case. What you are experiencing is simply the wool or cotton becoming slightly compressed with normal usage. Over a short period of time, the wool or cotton layer will become more evenly compressed as you naturally move and roll about your mattress. Regularly rotating your mattress will hasten this process and even the sleep surface.

Of course, our industry-leading 25-year limited warranty covers body impressions greater than 1.5 inches.

Sagging Corner? Just Grab the Corners and Shake.

If we used polyurethane foam in our mattress, the corners would immediately pop into shape. But since we don't want petrochemical foams in our mattresses, the corners (which use organic cotton batting) sometimes just take a bit longer to fully fill out after the initial unboxing. But rest assured, they will. However, if you're impatient — like all of us are — just grab each of the corners firmly by the top edge, lift it slightly, and give it a few shakes. That's usually enough to get the corners to fill out nicely. It's a simple trick that our Customer Experience Center says, "Works every time!"

    Wrinkles? Yes, They'll Go Away.

Your mattress uses a cover made with certified organic cotton. So, after being packaged and in transit, wrinkles are to also be expected — especially as your mattress continues to fill out within the first day or two. But this, too, shall pass.

Adjustable Base Compatibility? See How It Performs.

We get asked this often: How does an Avocado mattress function on an adjustable base? Surprisingly well, in fact. Although we do not have pictures on our website showing our mattresses on adjustable frames, the video product review by GoodBed.com offers a nice demonstration. It shows how our mattress conforms to the base and holds nicely in various angled positions.

"We use the Avocado mattress on an adjustable base bed and it works out great. I have never been a back sleeper and within a month of using my new mattress now find that I sleep the best sleeping on my back. Hands-down, this is the best mattress we have had in our 21 years of marriage!"
    — Kathleen H.

"Best mattress ever! Use it on my adjustable bed and it feels so good."
    — Corinne P.

Trouble Falling Asleep? Consider Lifestyle Changes.

Caffeine, blue light from television screens and tablets, and a generally stressed out society all contribute to a restless night's sleep. No one likes to toss and turn at night. To help, change lifestyle habits, increase exercise, eat healthier, make time for meditation or prayer, make whoopie, try massage or aromatherapy, read a book, and of course, decrease the use of electronics within one hour of bedtime.

    Off-Gassing? No, That's Mother Nature.

We don't use petroleum-based polyurethane foams, chemical adhesives or chemical flame retardants. Better still, our mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold® certified and tested by UL Environment®, which means they meet the most stringent standards for low chemical emissions. So, if you smell anything unexpected after opening your mattress, rest assured — your mattress is not off-gassing.

However, a very small percentage of customers do notice a slight, sweet smell, similar to vanilla. Some customers say it's a great smell, something natural. This is due to the natural latex and/or the natural wool used. Since your mattress was quickly packaged after being made (in California, not China, which we love to point out!), the strongest smells occur immediately after opening your mattress. In most situations, the smell gently dissipates over time. In especially humid environments, or for people with a latex sensitivity, it may be more immediately pronounced. You can accelerate the airing-out process by opening a window or leaving your mattress without sheets, if feasible. Some people also opt to use a few drops of essential oils. Regardless, it will go away.

"This mattress is the best I’ve ever owned/slept on! High-quality materials and no toxic smell even right out of the box."
    — Jane B.

"We love that it is all natural, no nasty chemical smell and that it is super comfy! We are going to buy Avocados for the kids now too!!!"
    — Sarah D.

25 Year Limited Warranty

  • What do you do with a returned mattress?

We have an extremely low rate of returns during the 1-year free mattress trial period, but, yes, it does happen. When it does, we arrange to have the mattress picked up — you do not have to package it or ship it back. We do our best to coordinate everything for you. (We have an awesome support team.)

So, what happens to a returned mattress?

Because we're a passionately green company, we do our absolute best to ensure that returned mattresses are donated to a local charity or provided to a needy person/family (subject to verification). We do not want a returned mattress to be recycled or, in a worst-case scenario, end up in a landfill. This is important to us. Donating mattresses is done in the spirit of our broader Giving initiatives and our work with 1% for the Planet.

How can you help? Ensure that your mattress is able to be donated. Products must be in a condition suitable for donation (i.e., no stains, tears, excessive odors or soiling). Protect your mattress and topper with our Organic Mattress Pad Protector.

Rest assured, we do not resell previously used mattresses, and we only use all new materials in every mattress (which is confirmed on your mattress’ legal label).

Donating a returned mattress is a logistical and time-intensive challenge for us to help coordinate, but one that we're happy to undertake. If the program is done right, the impact can be significant, turning an unfortunate situation (a returned mattress) into a positive one!

For example, here's a snap of Sarah in Seattle after receiving her donated Avocado Green Mattress.

And here's another photo, from Butch and Becky, after receiving their donated mattress.
  • When do I receive my refund?

Once we’ve received your items, we will refund your payment within 1-3 business days (although the refunded money can take about two weeks for it to process back into your account).

  • How do I return pillows?

Contact our Customer Service team within 100 days of receipt. They will give you a call to gather some feedback and help you print a shipping label, which can be used to ship back pillows and accessories via FedEx.

Payment Processing

  • Do you process my credit card when my order is placed or when it ships?

We process full payment, including all applicable state taxes based on the state to which your order is being delivered, at the time your order is placed. As our products are handmade in our factory in California, this is a legal and commonly accepted type of prepayment toward the purchase of goods.

Companies that typically charge at the time of shipment tend to do so because they do not make their own products, and want to mitigate the risk of nonperformance if their vendors do not fulfill their obligations.

As a customer, you do have legal protections, which we should note: The Fair Credit Billing Act and the Mail or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule protect you so you don't have to pay for merchandise you order but never receive.

And from our end, we do our best to manage expectations by making our production and shipping times clear: (1) in our online shopping cart, (2) on our website's Help Center, and (3) in the order transactional emails that are sent after you place your order. We also have a robust and expertly-trained customer service team standing by to answer your questions at any time.

Mattress Pad Protectors

  • Do you recommend a waterproof mattress protector?

We prefer our Avocado Organic Cotton Mattress Pad Protector to protect your new Avocado mattress from spills, stains, sweat, skin oils and life's little accidents. But since our Organic Cotton Mattress Pad Protector is intended not to be absorbent — not waterproof — some customers may require a waterproof option, especially for pets or young children.

For a waterproof option, we often suggest the Eucalyptus Mattress Protector by One's Own

Please note that the One's Own protector is:
Made with eucalyptus fiber on the top layer only.
    • Not GOTS organic certified, or made with organic certified materials. (Only the top eucalyptus layer uses a natural, not organic, material.)
    • Made with Thermo Polyurethane (TPU) for the waterproof layer.
    • Made with polyester.
    • Not Greenguard Gold certified.
    • Only biodegradable when considered the Eucalyptus fiber only. The TPU and polyester fibers are not.
    • Not made in America. (It's made in China.)

That being said, this is one of the better waterproof mattress protectors available and is offered at an affordable price.

  • Is there a non-waterproof, organic mattress protector that you recommend?

To protect your new Avocado mattress from spills, stains, sweat, skin oils and life's little accidents, we highly recommend our Organic Quilted Mattress Pad Protector. Soft, absorbent and completely non-toxic, it’s a natural alternative to traditional waterproof mattress protectors. No thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs), formaldehyde, PVCs, vinyls, laminates, adhesives, chemical finishes or waterproof coatings are used. It is as pure and natural as possible.

In fact, our Quilted Pad Protector uses only GOTS organic certified cotton inside and out. In fact, the finished product is also GOTS organic certified. This means it meets the highest ecological and social standards, with a verifiable chain of custody across our entire supply chain to ensure quality and purity — from our farms to your bedroom.

The Avocado Organic Mattress Pad Protector is:

    •  Made with 100% GOTS organic certified cotton inside and out •  Made with GOLS organic certified latex •  STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certifications for our cotton and latex
    •  GOTS organic certified by Control
    •  Made with Fair Trade® certified organic cotton sourced from India
    •  Handmade in Los Angeles in our own GOTS and GOLS organic certified factory
    •  Certified Vegan (since no wool is used)
    •  Greenguard Gold Certified by UL Environment
    •  Made Safe® Certified

  • Do you use models?

Actually, no. The happy people that you see featured on our site are "real people" — from our team, or our friends, fans and supporters.

  • How much would I pay for a similar mattress in a retail store?

The Avocado Green Mattress would retail for $3,500 to $4,200 in a retail store.

Why? Brick-and-mortar mattress stores have significant overhead and inventory requirements, and must mark-up their prices and pay heavy commissions to salespeople. We do not. We sell directly to you. And more importantly, our mattresses are handmade in a factory that we own in California.

Our referral marketing program is managed by Extole. Sharing the love is easy.

It pays to spread the word about Avocado!

We've partnered with Extole — the leading enterprise advocacy platform — to reward advocates for their friends' online purchases. Participation is optional.

    Here is how it works:

    1. Enter your email in the Extole modal window, which is accessible in the footer of the website, after purchase and via email after your purchase.
    2. Enter your friends' email addresses in the window, separated via a comma if you would like to refer more than one person. We recommend that you use core content in the provided note. But feel free to customize it, as needed, to personalize the message.
    3. Send the email, or opt to share the offer via email, Facebook, Twitter or Messenger. There is no limit to the amount of sharing or the amount of money an advocate can receive.
    4. When your friends make a purchase, they must use your unique coupon code that the Extole platform provides. If they do not use your unique code, you will not receive credit.
    5. After your friends complete their sleep trial, you will receive a $50 prepaid Visa® gift card via email.

Please note: Offer cannot be combined with any other offer. Our sleep trial period begins upon delivery of our merchandise, advocates typically receive their gift card approximately 120 days after the original transaction. This is required to eliminate fraud and abuse of the platform.

    1. Do I have to make a purchase to become an advocate?
Although most of our advocates are customers, a purchase is not required. Just visit this link and follow the simple directions on the Extole modal window.
    2. Can I continue to advocate for Avocado even after I receive my reward?
Yes. Just visit this link, and following the simple directions in the Extole modal window. Pro tip: advocates that share to Facebook typically receive the highest number of reward conversions.
    3. How do you prevent fraud and abuse of your referral marketing platform?
We only distribute rewards after the trial period is concluded, use unique coupon codes, employ unique referral ID, and leverage Extole's platform to monitor and alert us against fraud protection. Referrals are also not applicable for the same household.
    4. Do I need to be concerned with sharing the email address of my friends?
No. Extole is a third-party referral marketing platform. We do not use this data, other than this specific referral marketing application.
    5. What happens if my friends do not use my unique offer code when making their purchase online?
We have no way of tracking or confirming this sale, and can not extend financial rewards via Extole.
    6. Can I look up my account to see my stats?
