Going above and beyond flammability requirements is a top priority without using toxic fire retardants.

We do not use toxic flame retardants.

Ensuring your mattress is non-flammable is a requirement in the U.S., but the fire retardants used by most mattress manufacturers are not entirely safe. Most of the chemicals used are known to cause organ toxicity, hair loss, and other neurological damage.

Why do some companies continue to use them? Because they’re inexpensive.

Avocado mattresses are different. Our Green, Luxury Plush, and Latex mattresses use natural, GOTS-certified organic wool as a natural fire barrier. Our hybrid Vegan Mattress does not use wool — instead, we add natural graphite powder to the latex. And our Vegan Latex Mattress uses hydrated silica. These natural materials char and self-extinguish without the use of toxic chemicals and exceed all U.S. standards for flammability standards and safety.
